Scientists turn pineapple waste into high-value aerogels

Commercial aerogels, used primarily for heat and sound insulation, are costly and the manufacturing process typically involves release of toxic levels of carbon. A new process uses pineapple leaf fibers to create ultra-light, biodegradable aerogels. They are effective as oil absorbents and for heat and sound insulation.
